Someone posted a link to this video as a comment on a really old post the other day, and I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. I mean, firstly it might have just been spam, and secondly with the masses of folkish music coming out nowadays, you might worry it'd be getting boring or samey by now.
In this live recording of their song, 'Heavy Tree', however, Hunting Bears display a natural affinity with really intricate and intense folk stylings, as the song ripples through gentler sounds whilst slowly building into a majestic and confident crescendo. It's filmed in the clock tower of Leeds Town Hall, which certainly adds to the atmospheric performance as the ringing bells herald in the beginning of performance.
I especially love the use of the harp, which is on my list of "instruments I wish I could play"- it sounds truly sublime in this recording, adding sweet little embellishments to an already beautiful track. The band really seem to know what they're doing, and - even better - they seem to be enjoying it. There are some great harmonies between the vocals and the instruments are all played deftly.
Hunting Bears will be releasing an EP later this year. If you're into folk, their stuff is very much worth a listen.
